Jan. 3rd, 2003 10:52 amHad a really nice evening yesterday - feels like life is beginning to return to a degree of normality after the nightmare that was Christmas.. On something of a whim we went to see Die Another Day - it was all that you might expect from a Bond movie - excellent escapism, special effects, car chases, amazing sets etc etc. although I thought somewhat more violent than they normally are. There were some fairly nasty scenes involving prolonged torture that revolved around repeated beatings rather than being strapped to a table and lasered - unusual to see such realism in a Bond film... but all in all it was good and lived up to expectations (admittedly not very high ones).
We then went for a meal - the place we were going to go to was suspiciously empty - either a party planned or just no-one in, so we gave it a miss and went for a pizza instead.. again pretty empty but a table of gurlz out for a night of fun added some background noise..
Graham Norton was in China on the teeve - it didn;t really work - he was came across as disrespectful rather than engaging..but it was followed by a couple of fascinating programmes about art in China. One on emerging performance artists was especially interesting, although it made for hard viewing in parts. I have no real issue with pickling a human penis in spirit and drinking the resultant brew as a cocktail (no pun intended) but eating a dead baby was very hard to watch. Hard to talk about it without sounding pretentious, too - but it really did make you think about morality and custom and art as a challenge to established behaviours...
