Sep. 3rd, 2003 09:28 pmJust back from a meeting in Frankfurt - only two days, but lively nonetheless....although rather dull unless you are in to IT strategy and blue sky thinking.
The highlight, however, was last night, when we fetched up at a bierkeller and ate bratwurst. We were in the capable hands of a local host and I shouldn''t have doubted him... When he said the words "bierkeller" and "bratwurst" I assumed it would be some tourist clip-joint complete with Oompah bands and lederhosen but - I am glad to report - it was actually packed with polite locals happily swilling beer and eating sausages. Hurrah! Damn tasty too (the sausages, not the locals).
We rounded the evening off at the old square. Our host showed it off proudly and we exclaimed at the wonderful timber-framed buildings surrounding the cobbled square. He smiled wryly and observed that the buildings were mostly about 15 years old and had been carefully constructed to replace the devastation caused by the almost complete flattening of Frankfurt by Allied bombing during the war.... He didn't seem cross though :-) We drank a glass of a local speciality - a sort of cider, but incredibly dry and appley. Bloomin' good it was too!
Time for bed... I was woken up at 5:00am local time by what I can only assume was a competition taking place outside my hotel window - the goal being to see who could throw the biggest rocks into a skip. *sigh*
