Behold, the weekend is arrived! Hurrah!

I have been to Tesco and bought foodstuffs. I am in a cooking frame of mind. This evening I shall cook moules marinieres and tomorrow I shall cook roast pork with all the trimmings. I have bought some Bramley apples and am actively pondering an apple crumble.

I have just spent half an hour digging out my Gaggia espresso machine from the back of the kitchen cupboard where it has languished, stickily, for many a year. It is now clean and shiny again and I am drinking an oversized espresso. Expect gibbering shortly.

This espresso is dangerous stuff. I have cleaned and tidied the house and been listening to Oasis rather too loudly for comfort. I think I shall have a lie down in a darkened room. Or perhaps I shall watch one of the DVDs I bought today. Tesco are selling three for £20 so I bought: "The Italian Job", "The Pianist" and "Being John Malkovich".

Alternatively I could carry on reading "A Short History of Nearly Everything". I highly recommend it. It is engagingly written, amusing and informative (lucky really, that last one). It is also full of astonishing facts that make my brain blink.

Here's something to think about...

You have two parents, right? You were conceived when your parents were (roughly) 25 years old. Each of your parents had two parents. Your parents were conceived when their respective parents were (roughly) 25 years old.

Let's say you are 35. That means that in 1944 two people got it together to create you. It also means that in 1919 four people (two pairs) got it together to create your parents and so, ultimately, to create you.

Extrapolate this backwards and you'll find that in 1794, one hundred and twenty eight people got it together to make you.

And in 1269, two hundred and sixty eight million, four hundred and thirty five thousand, four hundred and fifty six people got it together - just for you.

And in 1069, sixty eight billion, seven hundred and nineteen million, four hundred and seventy six thousand seven hundred and thirty six people were at it like knives just so that you could enter into this world nine hundred and thirty five years later.

Except that the population of the entire world today is "only" six billion....

The phrase "keep it in the family" springs to mind....
